St Stephens Church of England Church, Cinderford, Gloucestershire
The church is a Grade II listed building designed by C.H. Lingen Barker of Hereford. It is constructed from stone with a chancel, nave of four bays and aisles, the stained glass east window being the gift of Lady Crawley-Boevey, of Flaxley Abbey.
St Stephen’s Church was the inspiration for the literary work of poet, author, memoirist and educationalist, Leonard Clarke OBE. His writing connected the industrial mining backdrop of 20th Century Cinderford with the hidden nature of the surrounding Forest. His family home was on Belle Vue Road and he was a chorister in the church where his life was commemorated and he was interred in 1981. Although widely travelled his spiritual home always lay in Cinderford and the Forest landscape.
Cinderford Churches in collaboration with the Foresters’ Forest project “Reading the Forest”, who have featured on BBC Radio Gloucestershre, BBC Radio 4 Catherine Harvey’s “Tongue and Talk” and BBC TV Points West this year, have recorded a special tribute to Clark’s writing and influence, featuring readings from Forest poet Keith Morgan featuring Clark’s opus “An Intimate Landscape” and his family reading their favourite selected works.
